Canon Technology: DIGIC Accelerator and Stacked Sensor

The R1 is designed for speed, featuring a newly developed 24.2MP full-frame back-illuminated stacked sensor. It delivers rapid readout speeds and achieves an impressive continuous shooting rate of up to 40 fps using an electronic shutter, providing blackout-free viewing and significantly reducing rolling shutter distortion. The sensor's back-illuminated design, coupled with advanced DIGIC Accelerator processing, enhances clarity and sharpness while supporting a native ISO sensitivity up to 102400. Neural Network Noise Reduction ensures exceptionally clean files, particularly in low-light environments.

Continuous Shooting Features

The EOS R1 offers versatile continuous shooting capabilities. It supports a high-speed shooting mode of up to 40 fps, complemented by Pre-Continuous Shooting. This feature allows the camera to continuously buffer 20 frames over 0.5 seconds when the shutter button is half-pressed, ensuring that you capture every crucial moment. The camera includes a mechanical shutter that supports a continuous shooting rate of up to 12 fps, providing flexibility for various shooting scenarios.

Upscaling In Camera

In situations where 24MP resolution falls short, the EOS R1 utilizes DIGIC Accelerator processing to introduce In-Camera Upscaling. This innovative feature leverages deep learning to double the number of pixels both horizontally and vertically, swiftly generating a separate 96MP image in approximately 10 seconds. This upscaling capability can be applied post-capture or during in-camera image cropping, offering significant time savings compared to creating a 96MP image and subsequently cropping it.

DIGIC X Processor and Accelerator

The EOS R1 leverages the power of two advanced processors to achieve its impressive capabilities. It features the newly developed DIGIC Accelerator front-engine processor alongside the established DIGIC X processor.

While the DIGIC X focuses entirely on image processing, the DIGIC Accelerator enhances functions such as continuous shooting, subject detection, tracking, and autofocus. Together, these processors efficiently handle large volumes of data, execute multiple tasks simultaneously at high speeds, and enhance the effectiveness of advanced features like In-Camera Upscaling and Neural Network Noise Reduction.

The camera benefits from deep learning capabilities for Auto-Exposure and Auto White Balance modes, precise 6144-zone exposure metering across diverse lighting conditions, coordinated Image Stabilization combining IBIS with Lens-Based IS, and supports Anti-Flicker shooting and High-Frequency Anti-Flicker shooting modes.

Imaging Stabilization with Sensor Shift

The EOS R1 employs a comprehensive image stabilization system that enhances both photo and video quality through three distinct methods. Firstly, its 5-axis sensor-shift system within the camera body mitigates camera shake, ensuring sharper handheld shots at slower shutter speeds with any lens.

When paired with RF lenses featuring image stabilization, Coordinated Control IS further boosts stability, providing up to 8.5 stops of correction at the center and 7.5 stops at the edges of the frame. Lastly, for video recording, the camera utilizes Movie Digital IS, an electronic stabilization system that effectively minimizes blur in peripheral areas, facilitating smoother handheld video capture.

Dual Pixel Intelligent Autofocus

The EOS R1 places a strong emphasis on autofocus performance, a hallmark of flagship cameras. Its AF capabilities are finely tuned to detect, track, and maintain precise focus on moving subjects, even in challenging scenarios where subjects briefly disappear from view.

Powered by a sophisticated Dual Pixel system, it integrates cross-type AF for enhanced responsiveness and accuracy, particularly in scenes rich with linear details such as window blinds or patterned backgrounds.

The camera excels in low-light conditions with focusing capabilities down to -7.5 EV for photos and -5.5 EV for videos. Its advanced 4897-point phase-detection system automatically identifies and tracks People, Animals (Dogs, Cats, Birds, and Horses), and Vehicles, with specialized Eye Detection that can prioritize either the left or right eye, making it the most intelligent and user-friendly focusing system in the EOS lineup to date.

Subject Detection, Tracking and Action Priority

The DIGIC Accelerator introduces a specialized focusing mode tailored for sports and action photography called Action Priority. This intelligent AF mode identifies specific movements like shooting, passing, and jumping, automatically adjusting the AF area to track the subject performing these actions in sports such as Soccer, Basketball, and Volleyball. It analyzes various aspects like Ball, Joint, Torso, Action, and Head information to enhance tracking accuracy during dynamic scenes.

Action Priority can be easily toggled on or off using a custom function button for quick access. Additionally, the camera supports Pre-Registered Person Priority, allowing users to register up to 10 individuals beforehand to prioritize focus on during events.

This intelligent subject recognition feature ensures sharp focus on the intended subject even when partially obscured or intersected by other elements in the frame, especially when used in tandem with Pre-Continuous Shooting mode.

Eye Control AutoFocus

Derived from the EOS R3, the R1 incorporates the innovative Eye Control AF feature, enabling users to focus simply by looking at their desired point and pressing the AF activation button. The R1 enhances this technology with 2x faster detection, an improved line-of-sight detection algorithm, and increased adaptability to varying eyelid thicknesses, eyelash lengths, camera handling positions, and even the presence of eyeglasses.

Designed for Reliability

The Canon R1 is designed for reliability in professional applications with a 9.44m dot OLED electronic viewfinder, and rear LCD, magnesium alloy exterior, dust and water resistant body, a lighter body design than the EOS 1D Mark III, and an integrated vertical grip.

OLED EVF and Rear LCD

The R1 introduces the most advanced viewfinder yet seen in an EOS R-series camera, boasting an impressive 9.44m-dot OLED EVF with a substantial 0.9x magnification for clear and comfortable eye-level viewing. Its high resolution and magnification cater to a variety of viewing conditions, particularly benefiting users who wear glasses.

The EVF's optical design has been upgraded for enhanced clarity, and certain components are sealed within an airtight structure to prevent fogging during extreme temperature or humidity conditions. Additionally, the EVF features a 9.44m-dot OLED panel that is three times brighter than the EOS R3's EVF. For further flexibility, the camera includes a rear 3.0" 2.1m-dot touchscreen LCD with a vari-angle design, facilitating easy shooting from high and low angles.

Body Designed for the Professional

The EOS R1 features a robust magnesium alloy exterior that is fully dust- and water-resistant, with comprehensive sealing at all seams and behind each button. Compared to its SLR predecessor, it measures 0.7 inches shorter and weighs 2.1 pounds, making it over half a pound lighter. Its integrated vertical grip enhances ergonomics, providing a more comfortable hold during extended shooting sessions, thanks to updated rubber materials that offer improved traction.

Similar to the EOS R3 and EOS-1D X Mark III, the EOS R1 utilizes the high-capacity LP-E19 lithium-ion battery for reliable and long-lasting power. It is equipped with dual CFexpress Type B memory card slots, enabling high-speed recording modes, high bit-rate recording, as well as proxy recording and file type separation to streamline post-production workflows.
