24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor and GR Engine 6
Sporting a refreshed design, the GR III HDF boasts a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor coupled with the new GR Engine 6, delivering high-resolution 14-bit DNG or JPEG stills characterized by remarkable tonality, true-to-life color rendition, and excellent sensitivity spanning ISO 100-102400. Alongside full-resolution wide-angle imagery, it offers two practical crop modes—35mm at 15MP and 50mm at 7MP—allowing you to mimic the effect of using longer focal lengths.
Moreover, beyond still photography capabilities, the GR III HDF excels in Full HD 1080 video recording, supporting frame rates of 60p, 30p, and 24p.
Prime Wide-Angle Lens
The GR III HDF features a fixed prime 18.3mm lens, providing a comfortable 28mm equivalent wide-angle perspective. Its bright f/2.8 maximum aperture adapts well to various lighting conditions. With an optical construction comprising six elements in four groups, including two aspherical elements, it effectively minimizes spherical aberrations and distortion, enhancing sharpness and accuracy in rendering. Two focusing modes cater to both general and close-up subjects, with a dedicated macro setting enabling shooting at a distance of 2.4-4.7". An internal two-stop-effective (ND 0.6) filter allows for adjusting shutter speed or widening aperture settings, while the nine-blade diaphragm ensures smooth bokeh quality. Furthermore, the redeveloped lens design enhances contrast and reduces thickness by 1.5mm compared to previous GR/GR II digital cameras.
Shake Reduction System
Debuting in a GR camera for the first time, a 3-axis Shake Reduction System is introduced to reduce the impact of camera shake, facilitating sharper handheld shots at slower shutter speeds. Specifically optimized for the built-in 28mm-equivalent lens, this system is compact yet highly efficient. Moreover, the SR unit also delivers moiré reduction and dust removal functionalities.
Body Design
The defining characteristic of the GR-series remains its compact, pocket-friendly size, which accommodates a large image sensor and a bright prime lens.
Its integrated 3.0" 1.037m-dot LCD incorporates a capacitive touchscreen design, ensuring intuitive and familiar operation during shooting, playback, and menu navigation.
The camera's rear layout undergoes a complete redesign, prioritizing a larger and more comfortable thumb grip, along with easily accessible physical dials. Furthermore, the ADJ lever, FN button, and Touch AF operations are customizable, allowing for personalized control of specific functions.
With a reduced start-up time of 0.8 seconds and improved Hybrid AF performance, the camera offers smoother operation.
Integrated Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi enable wireless connectivity between the camera and a paired mobile device. This allows for embedding location information within files and transferring files to your mobile device, even when the camera is powered off.
The included DB-110 rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 200 shots per charge.
Lastly, a USB-C port facilitates file transfer and in-camera battery recharging.
