Full-Frame BSI Sensor and BIONZ X Processor

Equipped with a back-illuminated structure, the 24.2-megapixel full-frame Exmor R CMOS sensor, in collaboration with the BIONZ X image processor, delivers high-resolution photos and videos with reduced noise and enhanced processing speed. This BSI sensor significantly boosts data readout speed, enabling the capture of 14-bit, high-resolution images across a native ISO range of 100-51200, extendable to 50-204800. Additionally, it supports internal UHD 4K video recording across the sensor's full width, offering a broad dynamic range. The BIONZ X processor, together with a high-speed front-end LSI, ensures quicker processing times and the capability to achieve an impressive 15-stop dynamic range at lower sensitivity settings.

This synergy between the sensor and processor also enables rapid continuous shooting up to 10 fps at full resolution for as many as 177 consecutive shots, with persistent AF/AE tracking, applicable to both mechanical and electronic shutters. In live view mode, the camera can achieve a continuous shooting rate of up to 8 fps, ensuring versatility across various shooting scenarios.

UHD 4K Video Recording in XAVC S Format

The camera supports internal UHD 4K movie recording at various frame rates up to 30 fps, employing 2.4x oversampling for enhanced detail. Full pixel readout is also achievable, enhancing the quality of the footage by reducing moiré and aliasing effects. Additionally, Full HD 1080p video can be recorded at frame rates reaching 120 fps. Both 4K and Full HD resolutions make use of the high-efficiency 100 Mb/s XAVC S codec, encapsulated in an MP4 format with 4:2:0 color sampling.

The capability for high-speed recording at 120 fps further allows for 4x and 5x slow-motion video creation when the playback frame rate is adjusted to 30p or 24p. Beyond the advanced internal recording features, the camera also offers an uncompressed HDMI output, facilitating the use of an optional external recorder to achieve pristine 4K footage with 4:2:2 color sampling.

S-Log3, HLG, and Other Color and Gamma Controls

The a7 III offers a wealth of customizable options for color and gamma settings, allowing users to fine-tune the gamma curve, black levels, knee, color levels, and more to their preferences. It includes the option to utilize the S-Log2 Gamma Curve, which is also found on Sony's high-end cinema cameras. This feature enables the video signal to capture up to 1300% more dynamic range than the standard REC709, significantly enhancing flexibility in post-production.

Additionally, the camera supports HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) and the BT.2020 color space, facilitating recordings that encompass a broad color gamut. Beyond S-Log2, the a7 III also provides S-Log3, offering an effective 14-stop dynamic range. This further improves grading control, particularly in the shadows and mid-tones of the image, for even more nuanced post-production adjustments.

Autofocus and Image Stabilization

The advanced 4D FOCUS system has been upgraded to include a mix of 693 phase-detection points that span about 93% of the image area, coupled with 425 contrast-detection zones, ensuring fast, accurate autofocus and efficient subject-tracking capabilities. This enhanced Fast Hybrid AF System now delivers double the focusing speed and more dependable tracking than earlier a7 iterations, alongside notable improvements in low-light focusing performance.

  • Lock-on AF maintains focus on moving subjects through the use of a configurable frame that is set over the desired moving subject
  • Expand Flexible Spot employs neighboring focus points to retain focus on moving subjects even if the originally selected point loses focus
  • Eye AF can be used to base focus on recognized subjects' eyes for portraits and is available in both AF-S and AF-C modes
  • Focus Magnifier function can be used for critical focus when homing in on minute subject details
  • Rear touchscreen can also be used for Touch Focus control and a Touchpad Focus Control mode lets you use the rear screen intuitively while keeping your eye to the viewfinder

5-Axis SteadyShot INSIDE Image Stabilization

Embedded within the durable a7 III is an effective 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE stabilization system, which provides up to 5 stops of stabilization to counteract five distinct types of camera movement that can occur during handheld shooting of both stills and videos. This feature empowers users to confidently utilize any lens, including adapted ones, for critical photography and videography without the worry of blur caused by camera movement.

The stabilization system is particularly adept at correcting pitch and yaw movements for shots taken with long focal lengths. For macro and high-magnification photography, the system offers compensation for horizontal and vertical shifts. Additionally, roll compensation is beneficial across all types of shooting. Remarkably, all five axes of stabilization are active at all times, regardless of whether the lens used is a third-party lens with an adapter, or a lens that already includes optical stabilization.

Body Design and Connectivity

The XGA OLED Tru-Finder electronic viewfinder (EVF) boasts a resolution of 2.36 million dots and a magnification of 0.78x, offering users vivid and finely detailed views. Alongside the EVF, there's a 3.0" rear LCD screen with 922k dots, featuring a touch panel interface for straightforward and intuitive control, particularly useful for focusing. The screen's design also allows for tilting—107° upwards and 41° downwards—enhancing the ease of shooting from various angles, whether high or low.

The magnesium-alloy chassis of the camera ensures it is both rigid and durable yet lightweight, ideal for enduring the demands of frequent use. The lens mount has been reinforced to offer better support for heavier lenses, and the grip has been redesigned for more ergonomic hand-holding. To enhance reliability in various shooting environments, weather-sealing has been applied to protect against dust and moisture, ensuring the camera's performance in adverse weather conditions.

Battery efficiency has been significantly improved with the use of the NP-FZ100 battery, allowing the a7 III to achieve an estimated 710 shots per charge. For storage, dual SD card slots offer versatile file management options, enabling users to separate RAW and JPEG files or to extend recording capacity. One slot is compatible with UHS-II cards, offering faster data transfer rates.

Connectivity options have been expanded with the inclusion of a USB 3.0 Type-C port, alongside a micro-USB port, providing more efficient tethering capabilities and the convenience of charging the camera directly from a power source while connected.

Integrated Wi-Fi capabilities facilitate instant sharing of images to mobile devices for easy posting on social media platforms, emailing, or uploading to cloud storage. NFC support simplifies the process of connecting to compatible mobile devices with a single touch, eliminating complex setup procedures. Once connected, the device can access a live view from the camera and remotely control the shutter. Additionally, Bluetooth connectivity enables the acquisition of location data to accompany images.
