Sony continues to elevate G Master standards with the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II, enhancing edge-to-edge sharpness and contrast by addressing various spherical and chromatic aberrations. Its fast f/1.4 maximum aperture excels in challenging lighting conditions and provides precise control over focus with shallow depth of field. The lens features a Nano AR II Coating that minimizes surface reflections, flare, and ghosting, improving contrast and color rendering in bright light. Additionally, the rounded 11-blade diaphragm creates attractive bokeh for selective focus techniques.

The autofocus of the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II is powered by an XD (Extreme Dynamic) linear motor, offering significantly improved performance over the previous DDSSM system. This results in faster, quieter, and more precise autofocus, making it ideal for both video and stills. Enhanced AF speeds benefit shooting fast-moving subjects, with support for up to 120 fps when paired with the Sony a9 III mirrorless camera. The internal focusing design further enhances the lens's responsiveness and overall focusing performance.

As camera design evolves to cater to both photo and video shooters, the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II lens has been updated with features tailored to video needs. Focus tracking is precise and smooth, even at frame rates up to 120p. Focus breathing is minimized, with additional support for the Breathing Compensation function in select cine-line and Alpha cameras. Linear Response MF ensures natural and intuitive manual focus control. The physical aperture ring can be de-clicked for seamless, silent aperture adjustments, making it ideal for video applications.

Weighing approximately 20% less and measuring about 13% smaller than its predecessor, the 85mm f/1.4 GM II offers a durable, portable, and versatile design suitable for a wide range of applications. It features two programmable focus hold buttons and a focus mode switch for intuitive focus control. The lens's hybrid construction combines metal and plastic components, balancing durability with a lightweight design. It is also dust- and moisture-resistant, with rubber gaskets at the seams and a rubber ring sealing the lens mount to ensure reliable performance in challenging weather conditions. Additionally, the front lens element has a fluorine coating that repels water, oil, and other contaminants, making it easier to clean.
